I recently started a new job with the local County Health Dept, and the expense account checks I receive from my employer are drawn on1st Security Bank. I have been in the market for a new bank, yet for the time being I just needed to cash my expense checks. I was appalled to find out that 1st Security charges $5.00 per check to cash a check for a non-accountholder.
As someone who has worked in banking for 11 years, I was disgusted at this policy. I know that this is a method to incentivize people to open an account, yet it has done just the opposite. Since the inception of banking, one has been able to go to the bank where the check is drawn and cash that check free of charge. I cannot, in good faith, ever open an account with an institution who participates in such unethical procedures.
1st Security should be ashamed.
