Today, I had the unfortunate experience of interacting with an employee named Alex at the a.m. p.m. market located at 3300 Hillcrest in Antioch. After making a considerable gasoline purchase of $70, I walked in to buy a lottery ticket, only to be met with an incredulous age inquiry. For context, I am a mature adult who has been working for over four decades. When I challenged him on the necessity of this question given my apparent age, Alex nonchalantly brushed it off, saying it's "procedure."
What was even more baffling was seeing two other patrons, who were unambiguously adults, buy their tickets without any hiccup. When I pointed this inconsistency out, Alex took a confrontational tone, stating that if I didn't provide my age, he wouldn't sell me the ticket.
Such pettiness and unprofessionalism should have no place in customer service. It's disheartening that this is the face a.m. p.m. chooses to represent their establishment. If the intent was to ensure a loyal customer thinks twice before returning, then mission accomplished, Alex.
Every business ought to treat its patrons with respect, and today's experience was anything but. Highly disappointing.
