Price gouging during heatwave in order to reap a profit over trying to help their customers. Deplorable and unethical but I guess, whatever works from their standpoint. I won't be shopping here again. $499 for an AC that goes for $330 to $350. I should have done my research better and will try not to get swindled next time I encounter people like this. At least I won't be getting swindled by the people at Ankeny Hardware anymore. Neither will any of my friends. The "no refunds and no cancellation policy" should have tipped me off from the get go... but I was too trusting.
Buyers beware, be smarter than I was and do your research. Good luck and Godspeed future buyers!

I had a troubling and negative experience at this store. The owner is very condescending, a know it all, and not honest. I purchased some old type stove burners he had in stock, and assorted other things. I primarily came in for the burners. He didn't give me a price for them at the beginning as I had requested, but said let's wait until the end. He then asked me what other stuff was on my list, but I wasn't going to shop for those items there as his store is very pricey. Being the expert salesperson he is, he spent two hours with me making sure that I purchased every item on my list at his store. Afterwards, he cross-referenced some older numbers I had and found them in his extensive card catalog. That part was very helpful and quite impressive. Not many stores in the area have that capability. He still didn't tell me the prices on these items, eight in total. He then said okay let's ring this up. He then began writing these insane amounts on my ticket. It was a hectic day with many people waiting in line behind me. So call it peer pressure. I just stood there mouth agape and paid for it. Later I found the exact same items at Reliable Parts on SE 114th and Foster Road for $55.00 less. So I tried taking them back, but he reused the return. He said he told me when I was buying them that there were not any returns on electrical items or after 14 days. That never happened. It also turns out he noticed that one of the items were broken. Those items were in the same box that he placed them in, unmoved, and unaltered the whole time I had them. In the end, he just shooed me and my wife out of the store refusing to take them back. One of the other items was a padlock he insisted he would take back if it didn't work. He added that he also has another policy in regards to returns. He charges a 30% restocking fee. I would stay clear of this very expensive trap. On another note... While there he sold a homeless guy a pair of bolt cutters. So if you happen to get a bike stolen in that area, you can go by and thank him.

This store is a godsend, especially if you just need a few pieces or parts. The prices are very fair, the service is friendly, and the place has every nut, bolt, and gizmo you can imagine.
