I purchased a marquise half carat diamond from Blue Nile. I found a stone after looking for a while, as marquise small diamonds are not that common. I wanted a smallish stone but a good one, without color and lots of sparkle. I studied the best dimentions for the cut and I spoke to more than one expert. I chose a stone that I, and the experts, thought it would be quite nice. I had planned to have it set in Italy, as I have a very good friend there who has been a jeweler for 50 years. He looked at the stone and told me it had a brown tinge... quite unfortunate, and that on a white gold setting would be a bit more obvious. Unfortunately the 30 day window for returns had already expired, so I was stuck with the stone. Now I have purchased a diamond band with very good smaller diamonds and I can actually see the brownish tinge. My advice, if you buy stones, have them checked immediately by an expert, as what they say and what it really is are two different stories. The people at Blue Nile do not ever see the stone actually, they only go by the picture and the description. Not the best way of assessing anything. I will not ever purchase anything from them, as they should have alerted me that they do not check for other possible stone colorations except than being cloudy or yellowish... So, shoppers be warned, have anything you purchase checked by an expert.... but better yet buy only what you see in person, and then have it checked too
