Today, my partner and I traversed the rural plains of the Pacific Northwest, eventually reaching our final destination in Walla Walla. After the tiring journey, our first stop on our quest of trying as many of the lovely wineries as possible in Walla Walla was Bontzu Cellars.
Walla Walla undoubtedly has many wonderful options, and by the end of our visit, we had tried a vast array of different reds and whites that Washington vineyards had to offer, but no place quite matched the experience we had at our first destination at Bontzu.
Sorin, the owner, was truly lovely, bringing a welcoming atmosphere in his humble corner winery on Main Street in a storefront decorated with the adorably impressive artwork of his granddaughter. We decided to try both flight options, consisting of two whites and six reds, 7 of which were made with grapes straight out of the Walla Walla vineyards. It would have been rather upsetting at this point if the wine had not matched the allure of Sorin’s humbled kindness and relaxing atmosphere, but thankfully the wine did not disappoint.
To have good wine in good company is a luxury and privilege that is taken for granted far too often, and as Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore” filled my eardrums as the incredible Grenache complimented my pallet in a way only fine wine can, I remember that despite the chaos that is America in 2020, there are still those moments of true bliss of the perfect alignments of multiple good things all at once, and that is thanks to Sorin and what he has accomplished with Bontzu Cellars.
I will remember and appreciate his kindness and the joy he created for us in our time we had the privilege to share with him, and I encourage you not only to visit this establishment, but to truly take a quick moment to forget all the trials and tribulations this world throws at us and appreciate everything this gem has to offer hidden in a tiny town in Washington State.
The wines we tasted at Bontzu are among the best we've had in Walla Walla, or anywhere, really.
We picked up a bottle of the Merlot, but every wine offered is unique, and exceptional.
Sorin is nothing but humble about his wines, and his kindness shines through.
