I found them through my medical insurance as they were listed as an "in network" provider that was accepting new patients. I reviewed their website and thought that they would be a good fit for my needs and phoned to make an appointment. When speaking with their admin person, everything seemed to be going well as she asked several questions about my situation and needs. That was until she asked how I heard about them and I explained the referral was from my insurance. She confirmed that they did take that insurance, however at that point, the tone in her voice changed and she sounded like she was hedging their availability. She suggested I review their website that talks about the negative aspects of using insurance. She promised a call back but it was clear from her NEW tone that I should not be optimistic about it.
A few hours later she called with that same tone and said she was sorry that the only person who could help me did not take insurance but would be happy to see me for $175 an hour. I asked again if their office accepted my insurance and she said yes. I explained that I was confused and she went on to explain that there was only one person in office that took the insurance and that she was busy. There was no offer of when she might be available - she was just busy. She suggested I look again at the list of providers on my insurance company's website (which was incredibly insulting). As politely as I could, I said if they have no one available who accepts the insurance, they should remove themselves from the list of providers. At that point, she became even more dismissive of me like "yah yah yah - talk to the hand". I am certainly not poor and could afford to pay the rate, however it was such an incredibly disingenuous experience I could never imaging going there. Perhaps they have good counselors, but I would suggest going someplace else that will treat you with dignity and respect. This was clearly a bait-and-switch routine. Get the referrals/calls from the insurance company then convert as many as they can to customers who pay their full rate.
