I attended 4 years ago with my (brand new to me) 1 year old rescue pup. In that time I have learned a lot about training and am still annoyed when I think about this training class experience. My dog was displaying some (very normal for age and breed) reactivity behaviors which I did not know anything about at the time. We ended up choosing to stop attending due to our in-class reactivity struggles and because the way our dog was treated did not help. If anything it made the experience way more negative.
This class basically teaches the humans how to train dogs using simple shaping and luring methods with treats. Additionally, the trainer instructed us to squeeze LEMON JUICE in our dogs mouth when she whined during the class. Looking back, I feel so awful we did that. Don’t let her do this to your dog. This trainer uses very outdated methods- some not very positive ones to boot. Clearly, the whining didn’t stop because we did not address the emotion behind the whining and basically made her feel worse around other dogs during class time. Yikes.
Skip the class, check out some positive reinforcement YouTube videos instead and learn how to train using luring and shaping. Socialize with a trusted older dog if socializing is your goal. If you’re a new dog owner, all in all look elsewhere. I will say CJ was very sweet and clearly loves what she does, but it was totally unhelpful training-wise.
