I wasn't going to share my experience I had today until reading that my experience was not one off. I had a male doctor, I can not remember his name, and I feel utterly embarassed for even going. A little back story, I have experienced painful and heavy cycles my entire life, but mostly regular as far as starting dates and duration. The past 3 months they've become extremely irregular, much heavier, MUCH more painful and just a lot of extra "symptoms" I've never really experienced before... not to mention the duration has become excessive. I have a history of DVTs, which means I should NOT be on any hormones... period... AT ALL. and that's not by my choice, that's what I'm being told by specialists for the past 4-5 years... anyways, I come in to the office same day because I'm in excrutiating pain after starting my cycle 10 days late. Now, I've experienced my fair share of ovarian cysts and I KNOW those are painful, but this was a different type of pain... so I knew something was up. I go to the appointment, the ultrasound tech is WONDERFUL, and I have hope that this appointment is going to shed some light on what I'm going through and make me feel not so crazy... I was WRONG. I get called back to see the doctor by the nurse, I'm already put off by how she's treating me (dismissive, non-caring, etc.), and then the doctor comes in... he's asking the normal questions and tells me he is going to do a pelvic exam, normal stuff. During the exam he does NOT communicate what he is doing, puts the speculum in with NO warning to me what so ever, instantly I'm in pain. He then does an internal exam with his hand, no warning again besides "youll feel pressure", causing MORE pain. I'm now EXTREMELY uncomfortable as I have NEVER in my 28 years and 2 kids experienced something like that. He then continues to tell me everything I'm experiencing is normal hormone fluctuations... and he recommends birth control. HORMONAL birth control. We then discuss my DVT history and he pretty much dismisses any concerns I have regarding that. Mind you, he has my forms in his hands as he's discussing my options... these forms show I have tried IUDs, depo and the pill in the past. He disregards the pill and goes straight to saying I need an IUD, which I then explain to him will not be an option due to numerous attempts and numerous complications in the past with IUDs... next he recommends depo, which I explain to him caused 12 months of a constant cycle... not doing it. His next option is the arm insert. I express my concerns and explain how uncomfortable that makes me because of horror stories I've heard, experiences I have seen first hand, etc. Dismisses ALL of that and continues to persistantly try to talk me into birth control because I need to regulate my hormones... and he can do it RIGHT NOW while im there... and these are the hormones that he hasn't ran any tests on to determine WHAT even needs to be regulated, doesn't discuss family history with me to know that EVERY female on my maternal side has had a hysterectomy at my age due to abnormal pap smears and precancerous cells and every single one of these women experienced exactly what I'm going through now. And he wants to start me on HORMONES that I have been told for YEARS not to take. Even OBs that have considered providing me birth control in the past wants me to consult with a specialist first to verify its not a risk to do so... I left this office extremely frustrated, in more pain than I arrived, and honestly feeling neglected by my Healthcare provider. This is the second time I've given this place a chance and I am DONE with anymore chances. To be told what I am experiencing is normal is laughable. Being in excruciating pain is NOT normal and should be taken seriously. Missing work because of that pain is NOT normal. I have NEVER missed work for cycle issues like this. I pay money to see these doctors, just like everyone else, and to be made to feel like I'm "making things up" or "overexaggerating" is extremely frustrating. Avoid this place at all costs.
