I had a concerning experience with Dr. Ajar regarding my mother's diagnosis of Lichenoid dysplasia with pre-cancer cells. After 3 months with Ajar, we switched doctors to receive the correct diagnosis after a tongue biopsy. During our first visit, Dr. Ajar unnecessarily scared us about the biopsy, claiming my mother would need to be put to sleep & recovery was lengthy and painful. However, the subsequent doctor performed a simple numbing injection for the biopsy, and my mother experienced minimal pain, which subsided within a day.
Initially, Dr. Ajar recommended a strict plan of avoiding spicy foods, using a mouth guard, and changing toothpaste for 60 days before considering a biopsy if there were no changes in the condition. We followed this plan diligently, but during our second visit, Dr. Ajar forgot to take a picture of the mass for comparison. He then suggested he would use another clinic with a anesthesiologist or him recommending another ENT doctor for the biopsy. The lack of organization and the suggestion to still wait another month worried us.
Frustrated, I sought another opinion and managed to secure an appointment with the Torrance ENT department. Within minutes, the new doctor examined my mother's tongue, took multiple pictures, and immediately recommended a biopsy. The procedure was conducted promptly, with the doctor explaining each step to my mother. The biopsy results confirmed Lichenoid dysplasia with pre-cancer cells, emphasizing the need for removal. We were referred to Cedar Sinai ENT for specialized care and the necessary operation.
In retrospect, waiting three months with Dr. Ajar was a regrettable decision. He charged $50 per visit for the 20% medicare doesn't cover and kept telling us how we are getting to see him is because we don't have medical and spent at least 5-10 minutes each visit about how poorly they are paid by medical and because my mom is out of state, she can see a specialist like him. His excessive fear-mongering about the biopsy, coupled with unnecessary discussions about payment and insurance, wasted valuable time while my mother lived with pre-cancer cells in her tongue. If a biopsy is an option for any diagnosis, it is crucial to prioritize ruling out cancer without unnecessary delays which is all that we got from dr. Ajar.
