While the care at Evergreen is good, the billing department is awful. My relative was battling pancreatic cancer and during one stay there, incurred a bill of nearly $45,000, which has been paid through insurance. However, prior to her being discharged, she was told to move to a new wing and a new room. We questioned the need for that, given that she was soon to be discharged. We also indicated we did not want to incur another charge for another room. Despite our repeated objections, she was moved to another wing and another room, just for the convenience of the Evergreen staff, so they could close that wing. They ended up billing her $325.00 for what amounted to an approximate 2 hour stay before being discharged. We have contested this bill for over four months, and nobody will take action to waive it. Our relative has since passed, and the hospital is still pressing for payment of a room and service we never wanted, didn't need, and objected to. The billing staff lacks compassion for the deceased and isn't satisfied that they have already received nearly $45,000 just for that one stay. Just awful!
* Update
Evergreen has now turned our $325 room bill over to Collections. I've tried calling their Customer Service Unit, who said they won't see us in person unless we first send them information on the Executor of the Estate of the patient who has since passed, and who incurred the bill. The deceased's patient's husband has dementia. He is in no condition mentally to assist, as he has had a stroke and has lost most of his short term memory. He can't tell you what year we are living in. He just had an evaluation today and said it was 1984 that we are living in. My wife has Power of Attorney in this situation. The Evergreen Customer Service Unit has no compassion, nor any desire to assist. They look for any way possible to stall, deflect, passing us around from one person to the next, and take zero accountability in a situation where we are trying to resolve this matter in a civil way. It is nearly impossible to resolve any situation when one party (Evergreen) refuses to participate. It can't be a one-way street and have any hope of resolution. I've experienced numerous situations where customer service was poor, but I think that Evergreen has now claimed the top spot for poor customer service, poor attitude, and has demonstrated that the nearly $45,000 they received for this stay just isn't enough. Apparently they need the $325 we objected to at the very beginning, to keep their lights on. This is absolutely ridiculous, and unprofessional on the part of Evergreen.
I've been an inpatient and now I am an outpatient. I see multiple specialists for emergency, neurology, kidneys, spine, physically therapy, chronic pain, urology and cardiology. That's way too many doctors not to be familiar with most aspects of Evergreen Hospital. This is a highly rated Hospital across the USA! I havegreat respect and admiration for their knowledgeable, caring, respectful approach to treating patients with all the time necessary and, if necessary, specialists to determine the cause of various conditions and current treatments for those conditions. I am particularly grateful for all of the nurses and PA's who have treated me so kindly.The radiology.staff knows their business.and for that, I am particularly grateful. While I'm in Washington State, I won't stray from Evergreen Hospital and THAT'S A FACT!
Be aware if you visit a specialist at this facility they use provider based billing and will charge you a $310 facility fee. This is not covered by your insurance. I would seek another provider who does not charge this fee.
Edit: I want to make it clear that I was referred to a specialist at this location by my primary care doctor. The copay in this situation is normally $70. The “facility fee” was not disclosed at any point before or during the visit.
Edit 2: They mentioned in their response that the “facility fee” is charged by most hospitals and is normal. I can tell you this is not true. Overlake Hospital which offers a superior service and is a nicer facility does not charge a facility fee.
Also, it’s has been almost 8 months since my visit there and they are still figuring out ways to charge me. I just got another bill for that same diagnostic as part of that visit, today. Eight months later!! All in all, an awful experience and I would recommend Evergreen Health be visited only as a last resort and even then, think twice.
