My review covers prenatal appointments all the way to delivery and postpartum as this is what midwifery care entails. I gave birth in May 2023 with a doula as a support person and it took me some time to process and get over my experience.
The midwives here are great but everyone needs to know that they still operate within a hospital / medical environment. You get to meet all the midwives but you won’t get to build a relationship with any of them because they have a big team. They will take your birth plan, read it with you and put it in your file but they will not remember your wishes as you are just another patient on another day.
All prenatal appointments are rainbows and butterflies until you get to labor and delivery. It’s a complete change in environment. You have no guarantee of having a midwife support you through labor and delivery. I ended up laboring for a longer time and almost getting a vacuum intervention because the midwife on call was attending to other patients. If you are insistent on delivering at Evergreen I highly urge you to get a doula to advocate for your welfare.
For postpartum care there is no debrief on your labor and delivery, which is so important for mothers who go through the trauma of birthing a baby. I find this is of utmost importance to get closure, more than checking the state of your vagina post birth. Because of this I’m very disappointed with how it was handled.
That said, I highly advocate for midwifery care but never when it operates in a medical environment. I truly hope my experience is an exception. I needed to write this as there is a possibility that others experience the same.
