I came to Express a few years ago when I was desperate for a job, which is the only circumstance I would recommend using this company for. I was new to the area, but have worked for other temp agencies in the past before, with good results that led to being hired on full time at other companies. I am a competent worker, but socially awkward and not good at "tooting my own horn" in the job hiring process.
I have done general office work, mostly legal, and did things at past temp agencies like mail room, data entry, envelope stuffing, and also more complicated office work. I was soon sent on my first assignment which was only a week of reception coverage, which went so well the girl I worked for specifically told me she wanted me back, but I'd already agreed to do a second temp job as a receptionist elsewhere the next week. I only agreed to this as I was desperate as, again, I'm very socially awkward so this sort of job that "should be easy" is an extreme struggle.
I communicated that this was not a good fit, and the girl who had placed me at the time said "can you work there just for a little bit?" as they'd already had the first temp they'd sent over dismissed by the company for being incompetent. At some point when I again communicated that this was not the best job for me, and I was not being trained and had just been thrown on busy phone lines with no clue what to do, it ended up being spread to the HR of the company I worked for which caused a problem with my boss there, and the HR at his work!! I assumed this would be confidential information between me and Express, but it's clear who they work for since they must tell everything to the company who pays them, instead of making sure to care that their temps are in good placements for them, which would work out better for everyone. I did get hired on at that company and stayed almost two years until I quit.
After I'd been hired on there, Express had called me randomly asking if I had "ever thought about working in insurance", trying to get me to come back to work for them again. "don't forget about us in your job search!" This made me assume they had several different types of jobs they may hire me out for.
When I was ready to go back to work again, I went to them. The guy I met with was new to me, saw I had legal work on my resume (which was extremely specific, out of state, and in a general hiring sense would only be transferable very entry level at other law offices here). He immediately booked me an interview at a law office that, when I read the ad, I was extremely under qualified for. I told him that, and he tried to reassure me. I interviewed and it was everything I feared, very awkward, I was not what they wanted, under qualified for the job. They still lied to my face that they'd be willing to do some training with me. He asked me how it went and I said, not well and I was under qualified- and he was like, yeah that's what they said. Why did you waste everyone's time? From there, he only wanted to book me on more 100% phone jobs like call centers, or more receptionist work. For about the first time in my life I had a spine, and said I did not want that. I understand that may be" all that they had for me," but I'd have done just about anything else.
At one point I was offered a job from them that was literally sitting in a Dr's office a couple days to fill a seat because they needed a certain amount of people working in that office legally. I texted back as soon as I reasonably could only to get a text back that they'd already found someone else to cover that.
I didn't hear back from them again. I got a mass spam text checking which candidates were still actively looking for work, and I sent back that I still needed a job. Never heard from them. I called back months later when I felt desperate for a job again. The receptionist told me it was in their system that I had found a job (I had not). They must have considered me a nuisance and just decided not to work with me anymore. She took a message and said that guy would call me back (he never did).
