This historical marker is placed near the site of a large log cabin that was built in 1852 along the water's shore in the town of Port Steilacoom.
During 1853, the log cabin was home to the family of Reverend John F DeVore, founder of Steilacoom's first Protestant church.
(Located near this marker is a momunent to the first Protestant Church (1853) north of the Columbia River. It is the site of the original location of Rev DeVore's Protestant Church. Constructed in 1854, the upper story was used for church. The lower level was used for a school and other social events.)
Within the log cabin, the first public school was held here in the Washington Territories, north of the Columbia River. (Steilacoom is designated as School District #1 within Washington State).
During the Indian War of 1855-1856, the log structure was also used as a blockhouse. It provided a safe house for local settlers during an attack.
There is only this small marker to indicate these historical events.
