I'm a light data user, and FreedomPop is perfect for light data users. I've managed to get by just on the free plan for 9 months now, and yes, it's really been free. After a setup fee, I haven't been charged a dime (note: you'd be charged for any overages, obviously). iI's great, and I recommend it to anyone I know who is also light data user. Even the paid tiers are competitive and if I suddenly needed that much more data on my account, I'd upgrade.
Regarding many of the negative reviews that held me back originally, I'll say don't read too much into the doom and gloom "they took my money" reviews that get all the publicity. Any company you sign up for a free trial with will eventually start billing you. Know what you are signing up for, and how to cancel if you decide it isn't right for you.
I say try it as an experiment, but keep an eye on the services you'd be billed for if you kept things as they are. I personally haven't been impressed with the "Services" you can get, but some may be a good fit for others. The free trial plan is actually a better deal than their regular plans if you keep it, but there are other options as well. And worst case scenario, you decide to just downgrade to free, which requires a $15 credit, and you've got 200mb (plus up to another 500mb for friends = 700mb) lying around on a SIM that costs you nothing per month. Speaking of friends, you can connect with other FreedomPop users, which not only gets you +50mb per connect, but allows you to share and receive data if you or your friends have extra.
I also had an encounter with support which went very well. Something odd happened and my SIM didn't register usage for 36 hours. When it finally did, it slammed 600mb in there that there is no way I used. Within 24 hours after submitting a ticket, they saw the error and resolved it by not only refunding my credit, but added 1gb to the account as well. I was very pleased.
I only knock off half a star because sometimes it takes a super long time for usage to register on their site. At least on my device, its own reckoning is always less than what ends up appearing on their end, so I've been able to trust that so far.
Do not use. I didn't have any problems ordering it. I only used for a short time and then canceled the services before my trial period was up. The months that followed were fine. I didn't have any recurring payments. However, a couple of days ago I get a charge for 24.99 which is the price for one of the bundles. Confused I send in a ticket and waited a couple of days since it was the weekend. They replied saying that it was for changing the services, so a fine, because the account was reactivated. I had to follow up because I had in to way used any of this since I stopped using it. They replied saying that it was the headquarters that reactivated to collect a fine which I still have no knowledge of. I haven't been able to get in touch since.
Don't get their services. It's not worth it.
