This is the biggest hydroelectric power plant in USA. They could do a better job at managing the tour. They say its first come first serve, but there is no way to enforce it !
Just one lady at the site was struggling to work all the fronts like parking, keeping track of headcount with a click counter and what not. We were asked at 2pm to come back at around 3.30 to lineup for a 5pm tour ! again there was "first come first serve" . I clicked some pics of the wall and drove back home. Its sad that so many stupid places get so much attention, publicity and an engineering accomplishment with historical significance is managed like this.
I see they must be getting sporadic traffic surges at weekends like this and nothing otherwise. Even though there are no tickets since its a free tour , they could hand out token number on arrival so that people have clear visibility and its true first come first serve !
Welcome to the historic Grand Coulee Dam! This is an awesome facility to visit and take the tour! Very impressive to say the least. It gives the average individual a very clear picture of where electricity comes from on the Columbia River. Grand Coulee is the largest dam in the Columbia River Basin and one of the largest in the world. Everything about the dam is large: it is 550 feet (167.6 meters) tall, measured from its foundation in solid granite, or approximately 350 feet (106.7 meters) from the downstream river surface to the top of the dam. It is 5,223 feet (1,592 meters) long, or 57 feet short of a mile. If you are out for a long scenic drive and want an amazing tour this may be a great place to visit and bring eager to learn children along for the tour!
