Huber’s Gasthaus left much to be desired for a Sept. 2023 wedding. We had secured the place for a rehearsal dinner on a Friday and wedding on a Saturday and were frustrated that so many of the assurances made a month before by the venue host at a check in meeting were not fulfilled. The venue is nothing fancy or magical – simply an older building in a NW tree/grassy area (mole hills/pot holes included.)
Rain was forecasted on the wedding day and we came prepared with that in mind.
We (not the venue host) had set up the chairs outdoors on Friday in hopes of a break in the weather but made the call about 40 min. prior to the ceremony to move indoors. It would have been so helpful if the venue host would have answered the phone calls and text messages at that time as we needed help moving chairs from the field, the podium and microphone – we texted and called the several times to no avail. Because he didn’t respond and we had to ask guests to walk through the wet, mole hill field to bring chairs in and then find towels to dry. Not having the microphone and speaker inside meant some of our hard of hearing guests weren’t able to hear the ceremony.
We were told there would be enough tables for the dining area under the large outdoor tent: beware, they are not all the same sizes or quality. Think some cheap plastic patio ones along with a more solid ones in mix of sizes. We were told the venue coordinator would set up per our layout – yet we had to arrange, find what we needed and set up ourselves. When we needed a cake table set up during the dinner, we had to find a guest who could help carry it from the main house and take care ourselves.
We were told there would be enough linens: the linen closet is a disaster, with a rickety ladder leading up to high shelves. I can’t suggest enough that the venue simply buy large totes and label them napkins, chair covers and round/square table cloths – sorting through the piles to find what we needed – because they weren’t there to support us - was super frustrating.
We were told there would be extra tents: beware, they are cheap, small with holes and not substantial. Because of the rain and wind, I am so glad we brought our own!
It rained and the tent sides (zip-on) for the main tent dripped buckets of water onto the patio and our guests chairs were in large puddles of water. The father of the groom brought out a giant broom to brush the water away while the venue host looked on, not even offering to help or even stake the sides away from the patio so the drips wouldn’t pool under the tables.
One guest had the awful experience of one side collapsing and a bucket of rain water hitting her head and dress, another had her purse fill with water.
We were told we could use the four chaffing dishes – they were dirty and needed to be washed before we could use, which we didn’t anticipate the extra time.
The kitchen supplies/drawers are disorganized and not useful.
The owner told us he would make the coffee in his machines– we brought coffee grounds and ordered the ceramic cups – but he was nowhere to be found and we weren’t able to offer – which would have been a lovely offering on our rainy evening.
There is no light on the back porch off the kitchen down to the patio area and it is very dark and dangerous. There were many near miss trips and the wet kitchen floor, because of the rain, was dangerous to say the least. (I suggest in investing in rubber mats for the kitchen, in general.)
Garbage overflowed. Oh how I wish I had a photo to share!
We were told the indoor fountain would be running and beautiful. A random couple of squirts of water spraying up was what we got – I wish I would have taken a photo to share how disappointing it looked.
On Sunday when we returned to load up dishes, the owner disappeared rather quickly, not even checking in to see how everything went, ask about our experience. I think he could tell we were disappointed but didn’t have the professionalism to ask about or hear our feedback.
We won’t be recommending the Huber Gasthaus.
