Let me start with a disclaimer. This is not a review written for the Latino community. I am a tourist, a bumbling idiot stumbling into kindness and delight and I do not pretend to be an expert. The Latino community will spread the word on their own and while I was at La Michoacana Dulce, it seemed like that was happening. I am writing this review for simple tourists like myself who have not yet discovered the absolute joy of the Latin Snack Mercado.
First, the folks at La Michoacana Dulce were beyond kind to me. The menu is strange to the average untraveled American, the options daunting until you have a grasp on what is happening. The young woman was patient and took the time to explain what was being offered and what I might like. I got a Tostiloco, which I have to say was one of the most fun things I have ever shoved into my mouth. A new obsession.
A Tostilocos is a concoction where you choose a bag of your favorite chips, for example Doritos, or Tostitos, or in my case, Cheetos and they add spices and lime and street corn and nacho cheese and Japanese peanuts and all kinds of other stuff and dump it all in the same chip bag like it’s having a little party in there and then they give you a fork and you go to town and I swear it was the most fun I’d had eating something since I was a kid in short pants.
I know it sounds strange, but really it’s great! The ultimate party in a bag, like a series of culinary oxymorons, salty and sweet, and crunchy, and soft, spicy, and… well just one surprise after another. I find myself thinking about when I can try another one. It’s another damned rabbit hole, as many combinations as there are stars in the skies.
So anyway after this hilarious culinary adventure I needed something on the sweet and cold side and I threw myself on the kind mercies of La Michoacana Dulce and ended up with this incredible sorbet type thing with pineapple and watermelon and papaya and chili and tamarind and it was one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life!
The Latin community have the best kept secret in the damned world. They have the best snacks, the best popsicles, ice cream bars, sorbets in the world and the rest of America floats by in blissful ignorance. I cannot believe it has taken this long for me to discover this treasure trove of absolutely amazing tastes!!!
And again I cannot thank the folks at La Michoacana Dulce enough for being patient and kind and helping me feel welcome and make my experience a stellar one. Here it is. Another incredible chance to step across a divide and try something different. The kindness here is like a bridge, a helping hand. The Tostilocos and the ice cream like a beacon on the far shore.
