Lived there for 8 years, parents still live there since 2001. If you're ok with HOA rules and regulations and didn't want much of a yard or any privacy from a fence then it's a nice place to live. Not much for teenagers to do, but great place for raising younger kids. There's events, parks, beaches, a golf course, driving range, and tennis courts. Activities include boating (and all that comes with it: tubing, wake boarding, knee boarding, skiing), fishing, swimming, sail boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. Personally I think the lake is pretty gross but they do spray the weeds and aerate it, and it's a nice place to swim in the summer especially if the local rivers are too cold and/or swift from a wet winter. Their 4th of July event and firework show is always a hit. LOP is located between Tahoe and Sacramento, so both locations are relatively easy to get to while the community itself is "above the fog but below the snow" (as my mom always said). Not a bad area. Very close to some local schools. Also the clubhouse and sports lounge were somewhat recently remodeled and both look fantastic now. The food service has greatly improved in quality as well so dining there is a real treat.

We’ve lived here one year today! After retiring to our mountain dream home and being so bored we move down the hill to Lake of the Pines! Best move we ever made, we love it here! Wonderful people, fun activities and you get so much for the cost of the HOA.

Lived there back in 2010 used to be a great place. They now sue one another for putting up a fence and argue over everything to include whether or not to have kids or dogs allowed on the beach. May want to consider new association leadership. What a shame this again was once a great neighborhood.
