Lory is an exceptionally sophisticated lady, and "lady" is the right word for her. She is an extremely classy woman, who puts her heart and soul into the works she does.
Sadly, I had just suffered a severe concussion, so I could not spend much time enjoying her or all the amazing finds hidden in this jewel of a boutique.
My son is a music producer. That means he makes the music you hear under the songs of artists in the pop, R&B and hip-hop category.
Since he was 14, he had dreamed of getting his track (music) on a Chris Brown song. This year, his dream came true. Meanwhile, all the time spent working in his studio took a toll on his health – causing him to gain a lot of weight. It made him feel ashamed and he hid from people – which is not good in an industry where being out with other music industry people is part of the game.
He went away on a trip for a music project, but over the months before he had lost 60 pounds.
As a surprise, and reward for all of his hard work – and is celebration of achieving his Chris Brown song goal, I bought him a Versace varsity jacket when he returned from his trip. Problem: I guessed the wrong size.
I bought the 42,, I should have bought the 38, if not the 40 – but it was too late. They (Nordstroms) were sold out, and the jacket was/is entirely sold out everywhere. I could not even find it on Real Real, or 1st Dibs or anything. So I had no choice but to get the jacked altered. But, WHO to trust with a Versace varsity jacket?
I turned to Yelp and found Lory's Leather.
My son came in my room and said, "Chris Brown is playing at the Forum so I'm going to go." My immediate reaction was, "It would be great if you would wear your new jacket."
I have a rule about people I work with. I don't rush them. I'm not the customer who comes in the door with shoes and asks them to be ready the next day. I'm not the customer who drops off the dry cleaning and asks for it by the next day. I respect the workmanship these people do. I build long and caring relationships with people that end up becoming a part of the fabric of my life. When I dropped off my suede/fringe jacket (when I first met Lory) I asked if it could be ready in 5 weeks (as I have an event date). That amount of time is being respectful. People grossly underestimate the time and effort that goes into alterations and repair.
When my son told me about the concert, I was so excited, I called Lory and asked if she knew when the jacket would be ready. Her answer was., "Saturday" – which is the day after the concert. I so wanted my boy to feel like a million bucks, after he worked for over a decade to achieve one of his dreams, that I pushed Lory to do the alterations earlier. She graciously agreed, but I knew in my heart of hearts that I was being unfair to her.
I called her back in less than an hour later to say, "Don't do it. He can wear something else" – but she was already hard at taking the jacket apart.
I apologized profusely for rushing her like that. It was so unfair to her.
My son went back for one fitting , and then went the back to pick up the jacket. He entered the house wearing the jacket, which looked flawless on him and makes him feel like very confident – which was amazing to see after he had been hiding so long from being overweight.
I have so many friends I want to bring by to see the wonder's of Lory and her amazing boutique. Her and he partner have an exceptional eye for unique pieces to treasure for a lifetime.
I still feel bad I rushed her. When I tried to tell her "don't worry, it can wait" she said "I'm started, I'll just finish."
She is a gracious lady, a beautiful heart and an beyond exceptional seamstress + brilliant.
Sending you my appreciation and love, Lory. Anyone lucky enough to so much as meet you, let along come in your boutique, is fortunate. – never mind if they are blessed with you fixing or altering one of their leather, denim or other clothing items.
I send you my love & blessings, Madame Lory. You're a bright star in this dark world.
