I’m a first time parent and was referred by my midwife to take Martha’s birth classes. I ended up attending the full series of birth, lactation and infant care classes. Prior to attending, I had a lot of fear, anxiety and misconceptions about labor, birth, and becoming a parent. The classes were wonderful. Martha is knowledgeable, supportive and honest.
After our baby was born, he wasn’t gaining weight well and we needed lactation support urgently. She was able to accommodate seeing us quickly and was available for us to ask questions. She helped us so much more than the lactation consultant at the hospital! Everything from giving us referrals to help my son with his tongue tie helping me with my breast pump settings and figuring out what size flanges to use, and especially helping my son and I get to a point where he’s eating and gaining weight like a champ.
Overall, it helped us immeasurably and gave us peace of mind. I don’t know what we would have done without Martha but I suspect my son would be eating formula by now (which a nurse at the hospital recommended the day after he was born) I’m so happy and so grateful that Martha helped us reach our goals with breastfeeding.
My family and I are thankful for Martha. She was the perfect fit for us. I didn't anticipate needing lactation services as I had breastfed my two other babies. By the time I reached out for help while struggling with my newborn, I was a mess. Sleep deprived, emotional, and feeling defeated. Martha had confidence in her ability to get my baby and I on the track I wanted to be on, even when I didn't, and I think that was important for my success.
She is knolagable and motherly and knows how to take the temperature of a room to offer personalized care. For example, my older children felt included in the discussions, which helped them understand why nursing is so important to me. She also created a room safe enough for me to cry about some pretty heavy things unrelated to breastfeeding. Looking back I think this was extremely important for me to get out the emotional issues, so I could work on the physical ones.
Thank you, Martha, for the holistic care you gave to my family.
