James F. Monaghan patented 312 acres in the Arrastre Canyon area of Apple Valley, California in 1919, and later patented an additional 315 acres of adjacent land in 1938. Monaghan's 627+ acre ranch extended from the old Paradise Ranch to the “Dead Man's Curve” on Bowen Ranch Rd(near Coxey Truck Trail). Monaghan was 1 of the 1st few men to homestead in the area, where he built a barn and a couple of small houses on his land. Monaghan had nice clear running water he piped 1/2 mile to his home from a spring in Arrastre Canyon, and local people in the desert would come there to get their water. Monaghan was well known in his time and was said to have had a heart of gold. Sadly, nothing is left standing of the Monaghan Ranch buildings after the 1999 Willow Fire, but you will see Locust trees and bamboo. Mohave Historical Society
