My father was a patient of Dr. Shin. 5 years ago I had to fight with the office for a chest CT referral since he was a long time smoker and this is routine preventative recommendation. Only after discovering Medicare covered the CT cost did they make the referral (Medicare started covering 3 years prior to my request...guess this went unnoticed by an internal medicine office...scary). Fast forward 5 years and my dad goes into office summer 2021 with complaints that his head felt funny/hurt. Doc flushed his ear and called it good. Turns out it the funny feeling was skull metastasis from the stage 4 lung cancer he had developed. No recommendation for a brain MRI. Dr. Shin also had copies of my dad's chest scan reports and knew there were nodules growing in his lungs...no discussion or reminder for more frequent chest CT scans. My dad could have caught his cancer at an earlier stage with a more informed doctor. As someone who works in oncology, this is gross negligence and aggregious ignorance of screening for cancer. Stage 4 lung cancer is most often found in folks who don't get regular chest CT scans and don't have regular check ups. My dad was doing what he was supposed to do and his docs let him down. He recently passed..a year after diagnosis. Do your loved ones a favor and take them to an internal med doc who has some competition and don't get imaging at Providence Olympia.
