I highly recommend New Alamo Residence Home for loved ones who can no longer be cared for at home. We had my 91-year-old mother-in-law move in with us during Covid so she wouldn’t be alone. Initially, she was doing well both physically and cognitively. However, after some decline, she was diagnosed with diabetes in July, 2022. Very quickly thereafter, she was no longer able to get to the bathroom on her own and it became very difficult for me and my husband to care for her. We started to look for senior care options.
I can’t express how fortunate we were to find New Alamo Residence Home when we did our search. I was looking for a place that would be close to our home so that we could easily visit her/take her places with us, that felt small and personal, that would be able to give her her medications (including insulin injections), and that had kind and responsible caregivers. When I found New Alamo Residence Home online and saw the positive reviews, I called right away. I knew that with the home being small (only 6 residents live there), they might not have an opening within the timeframe we needed, but we called and set-up a time to see it.
We met the owner, Meeran, and she was wonderful. She really stays involved with everything that is happening there. Each resident has his/her own room and most have their own bathrooms. They eat and watch tv in common areas and there are sunny decks off of several rooms. Luckily, there was an opening, and they were able to take my mother-in-law in addition to her beloved dog! We couldn’t have asked for more!
During the time my mother-in-law was there, the caregivers were so kind to her. They bathed her, dressed her, gave her her medications, prepared her meals, put her hearing aids in, had her ready if we took her somewhere, had her sit with the other residents to watch programs, in addition to feeding and walking her dog. They also were always available to talk with us about anything we needed to concerning my mother-in-law.
As her condition declined (she had a few mini-strokes), the caregivers did more and more to take care of her, including feeding her her meals when it got to that point. They guided us to hospice care at the end, and they coordinated the hospice workers coming in to provide additional care for my mother-in-law.
It is not an inexpensive place, but I have recently dealt with two other family members who needed care. New Alamo Residence Home was only slightly more expensive than a much larger senior care facility in Alameda that did not provide my sister with the same level of personal care and did not do anywhere near as much for her as her health declined. New Alamo Residence Home is also less expensive than 24-hour live-in care that I had to find for my brother-in-law who had had a stroke. Based on my experiences, it is a good value for everything they provide.
If you have a loved one for whom you are searching for a caring, home-like environment where his/her personal and medical needs can be taken care of, this is a great place.
My Mom has had a comfy room with a patio at Alamo Residence Home for the last 9 months. The staff members have all been wonderful — kind, patient, and attentive. Meeran and the staff are very flexible because they genuinely love their jobs. They aren't there just for the paycheck which is noticeable and greatly appreciated. The friendly staff, clean, and security make it worth every penny. Peace of mind is priceless... in my opinion. I highly recommend Alamo Residence Home.
