My Mother suffered from end stage COPD and emphysema. With the limitations of her medical condition, it became harder for her to take care of herself. She became ill, was admitted to the hospital and later to a rehab nursing home. She was placed on hospice care shortly after admittance. During her 30day stay at the rehab nursing home, I visited several Adult Family Homes (AFH). I interviewed the staff and guests, took pictures of both inside and out and reviewed the pictures I had taken at the end of each day. After seeing the pictures from Nurse Lavina’s AFH, she said that she wanted to stay there. Nurse Lavina’s AFH has a large porch in the back filled with plants and flowers. It overlooks a backyard which has several plants flowers and fruit trees. The front yard is filled with plants and flowers which are all around the edge of the lawn. My Mother was 5’ 7” and weighed 84lbs upon her arrival to the home. At first, she held out hope that she would be able to return to her home. She quickly made friends with the other guests, loved the home cooked meals and snacks throughout the day. She really liked not having to cook, doing laundry, cleaning the house and most of all, having someone help her with occupational tasks when needed. She was treated with respect, received excellent care and thus asked if she could stay longer. Nurse Lavina’s AFH gives everyone a personal touch so figures out what kind of food & snacks each guest likes. Mom was served her favorite brand of coffee and chocolate ice cream. I remember visiting her at dinner time and seeing her eating spaghetti. She never liked spaghetti and I reminded her of that. Her reply was that it tasted good and she now likes it. She gained weight, strength and stamina so was released from hospice care. She was very happy there, smiled often and liked the companionship of both guests and staff. The COPD and emphysema caught up with her so she passed away due to respiratory failure. She really enjoyed her time there and made some friends along the way. I would highly recommend Nurse Lavina’s AFH. The detail to care and medical attention guests receive is second to none.

This is owned and operated by 2 very loving and caring individuals who cared for my mom in her dementia with the utmost ability and patience. My mom lived here for 2+ years and she was kept clean, offered nutritious meals, assisted to move, etc. Before long she needed everything done for her and they were able to keep her with them until she passed away on hospice. Compassionate care. They have a home with a ramp and several comfortable recliners in the living room for the residents to relax in. Lavinia (owner) is an RN which makes it very convenient when new treatments or meds need to be started. She also monitors the residents' conditions and watches for any new symptoms to arise. She keeps the family informed of any change in condition. Visitation is very open for family members and family is welcomed in hospitable ways. The price was very reasonable too. I would highly recommend this adult family home in the North Tacoma/Pearl St. area.

Nurse Lavinia is very kind and cares for her clients a great deal. She and her family are good people that are loving in every way. My mother was a very independent woman and wanted to leave this world on her own terms and did with the assistance of Lavinia. In the University Place home, she was very comfortable and had everything she needed thanks to Nurse Lavinia. I can never thank her enough for what she did for my mother in her last days. Our family will be eternally grateful for her assistance so thank you Lavinia and all at the UP home that made her transition a caring and loving environment.
