Inspectors and supervisors are unprofessional, rude, and show no concern for tenant safety, public housing health issues. They take forever to assist you and do such a poor job at inspection.Even when you inform them of what's being done they will turn a blind eye.

Okay, I bumped them a spot. Inspector I've been working with was pretty reasonable.
Big complaint is that they don't actually review the MEP plans, so everything is reviewed/qualified in the field. You can end-up re-doing work even when you build per plan, so impossible to meet schedule. If the consultant or the MEP sub is not up on the code, you're kind of screwed.
Expect a lot of oddball/inconsistent code interpretations from the inspectors that will have you doing extra work and slow down your project.

I definitely understand the criticisms of the customer service here, but frankly, once you get your foot in the door and the approval proccess begins, you'll realize that this department is staffed with decent, professional people who want you to succeed in your endeavors. This isn't to say it's a day at the beach and that your hand is held at all times, but having dealt with many departments in the Bay Area over many years, I have to say that I prefer Oakland over the rest. And actually, if you do your homework prior to contacting customer service and you know exactly what you're asking for, customer service is willing and able to get you what you need.
