An historic mountain pass between the San Joaquin valley (from Arvin, off of Frick Rd) and the Tehachapi Valley, that was used by ranchers herding their livestock. San Joaquin summers were unbearably hot, ranchers herded their valuable livestock into the cooler mountains to graze, and would also buy & sell with the well-known mountain ranchers. Before autumn turned to freezing winter, making the path impassable with ice and snow, ranchers herded their livestock back down into the temperate San Joaquin valley winter .
