We are in Independence California for July 4 and decided to take the drive up the onion Valley. Long drive but very steep hill. But what a place when you finally get there. Altitudes about 9800 feet at the parking lot. Lots of scenery lots of water one major waterfall that we hiked to the river was flowing very nicely down the mountain great scenery. I can't believe I missed this place all the years I've been coming to the Sierras. If you're in the area I'd highly recommend taking half a day and making this trip.

Beautiful location on the eastern sierras. Vault toilets, fire pits/bbq ring, bear proof food storage and small trash bins. No running water, so bring your own or filter from the creek. Great starting point for many hikes. Good area to camp if you’re looking to bike Onion Valley Road. There’s a little creek running through the camp by campsites 7 and 8. Cleanest vault toilet bathrooms I’ve ever used. Kudos to the support service gentleman, Thomas Dillard, for keeping the restrooms that clean! EXTREMELY crowded during the weekends. There was also a mountain lion that paused at our campsite when it failed to chase down a deer. Be aware and be safe.

I really with they had drinkable water on the campsite, that is all that's missing. Also our reserved campsite was not properly marked by whoever is running it so other people had it occupied at the time of our arrival. They had to move out, but would have rather not done that if sites were properly marked. Other than that it was fantastic: clean toilets, wood on site, safe. We did not have any wild animal encounters, only chipmunks and squirrels :) gorgeous drive to the campsite high up on the mountain. Loved Evey second of it!
