Update- I recently returned to see some of my father’s books on display for $10-$14. I had misunderstood and assumed that 20-25% of retail meant ‘new retail’ and not ‘used retail’. And the usually surly staff member was pleasant! : )
My father passed away recently and left a collection of books. When I visited the buyback counter at Powell’s Cedar Hills, I found the staff to be considerate and helpful.
I was told by the manager that the typical pay for used books is 20-25% of the retail value. I was given $2 for each hardback book in excellent condition, and all by popular authors. Although I was disappointed with the low buyback prices, I was grateful for their help.
Many of the staff are polite and attentive, but some are dismissive and rude. A bookstore is a casual place, but being treated with consideration and professionalism is appreciated as was my experience at the buyback counter.
I believe that Powell’s Cedar Hills is a good place to shop as they offer an expansive selection, however, keep your expectations in line if you are there to sell books.
