I recall my father telling me how lengthy and winding a route the old ridge route was. I searched and found that much of the north part of the road is still accessible. So, I went out and sure enough there are historical markers with photos along the upper section. Gates lock off the road about 8 miles from the top, and also at the bottom, but there still is evidence of this very old roadway.

if you plan on going up in your car for a nice ride , good luck.. a car will not make it (unless you wish to take the risk)
I went up there on 1/23/22
half way up the road, the road turned into gravel and large rocks. I have a cadillac with lowprofile tires so I had to turn back.
