Wouldn't have majorly invasive surgery at Santa Cruz Surgery Center. I had 2 surgeries scheduled. Gallbladder removal and Open Inguinal Hernia Repair. Checked in at 7am and the Nurses were VERY nice, informative and I felt positive going in. My gallbladder ended up being gangrenous and the hernia repair (since it was open) was really painful initially. I woke up from surgery and was first given a pain med that wasn't effective. They eventually moved to a medication that worked and I was able to fall asleep for an hour. When I woke up I had bad pain again and they CLEARLY wanted me out of there! They turn everything over and prepare for afternoon surgeries at lunch time. I had different nurses and my comfort level was of little concern to them. They stated that at the center they cannot give more than 2 mg of dilaudid PERIOD. If they're not allowed to adequately control your pain post op then they shouldn't be taking on bigger operations or duo op's like mine. According to the American Pain Society, "Inadequately controlled pain negatively affects quality of life, function, and functional recovery, the risk of post-surgical complications, and the risk of persistent postsurgical pain." I asked for them to give me a dose to travel home without level 8 pain and that was when the nurse said they couldn't give more than 2mg. I know dosages and getting 1mg IV 90 minutes after the last dose is in NO way overdoing it. Besides the lack of pain control (the only real thing they are responsible for) they didn't give me a day to follow up with the Surgeon. The Surgeon called my contact but gave sparse details about what was found in my surgery. It felt like 2 different places. I would never go back there unless I was having something very minor done!
