Golliwoggs on the bottom shelf, dusty and with no historical information. Other appropriative pieces in the space were accompanied by pieces of literature. When I asked the manager to tell me about them he immediately got defensive and started telling me how they were history. I didn’t accuse him of anything and just asked a question—- fragility at its finest. He went on for 19 minutes on how they, the African American collectors LOVE these.
I said, we love reminders of Jim Crow and minstrel shows!? He said, love was a strong word.
I then asked if they were such a piece of history, wouldn’t they do better in a museum and not the bottom shelf of an antique store on the pier in Seattle? I asked where there swastikas were and they let me know they were illegal to display!!!!!!!!
Y’all spend your money where it matters- NOT HERE
