So I hate to leave a bad review and this hurts because I used to love to stop by and pick up the cobb salad for lunch on the regular. I got out of the habit back when they didn’t have a chef and all they were making was fried foods. It’s been a while so I thought I’d put in an order and pick up my South Bay cobb salad habit again lol.
But sadly my cob salad didn’t come with grilled chicken breast like usual. Instead it had cold thigh meat or something. Looked pinkish as well.
When I called to ask about it, I was told that the menu was changed from grilled chicken to cold dark meat. But on the physical and online menu it still says it’s made with grilled chicken and the price is the same. It’s a $17 salad.
I asked if I could have grilled chicken like what it says on the menu. They said they would “accommodate” me and I drove all the way back to the restaurant to pick it up.
The bartender on duty seemed like a generally nice person in any other circumstance but in this instance I was treated really coldly when I got there to pick it up. They acted like I was inconveniencing them instead of the other way around.
Maybe it’s for the better, this way I won’t be spending $20 on lunch a couple times a week. It all works out.
This pains me to write. I lived in the area years ago and would go to South Bay every weekend for brunch. The food was amazing, the service was great, and the drinks were cheap. It was a local gem that should have been on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives." I recently returned to the area and my first stop was South Bay. I knew they had changed ownership and was worried about it going downhill but figured it would be tough to screw up a turn key operation. Man was I wrong. I recently heard the entire staff from the former ownership has walked out.
I've been to South Bay three times now and served twice in the past two months. Last weekend I thought I would get brunch and sat at the bar. I waited for 15 minutes without being addressed or even handed a menu. Other customers who clearly know the staff and owners would go to the servers station at the bar and immediately get a drink. After the 15 minutes of being ignored, the lady next to me asked the owner if she was going to offer me a menu. The owner said "Everyone wants something from me right now and I just can't!" And walked away without even handing me a paper menu. I got up and walked out.
What a horribly run establishment. The new owners should be ashamed of themselves for allowing the quality of everything to go downhill as quickly as it has. They took local pub that was known for its menu and amazing food and turned it into something completely different which now just resembles the dumpy bar every town in America has. I wholeheartedly expect to see this place on Bar Rescue someday. Unless there is a change in ownership I will not be eating here again and I recommend you don't waste your time or money here.
