My experience with Trichotillomania and hair extensions:
I believe hair extensions have really helped me because they prevent me from pulling out my hair. While I do feel the bonds and tape often, they serve as a reminder to feel but not pull. It may not be ideal with all the oils on my hands, but it's better than pulling! I do itch quite often, but when my itching gets really bad and I feel the need to pick, I use the soft brush. The brush helps alleviate the itching. The maintenance of the extensions makes me extremely aware of my hair, as I usually pull without realizing it.
Having hair extensions means I need to take care of my hair by brushing it often, braiding it at night, and being cautious with my activities to maintain the extensions. It gives me confidence! I am proud to show off and take care of my hair. While I haven't completely stopped picking, the extensions have made me very aware of how often I do it. I believe they are helping retrain my brain and helping break the habit. Overall, I think the extensions have really helped.
As a person who has had trichotillomania since I was 8 (I'm 36), I recommend trying hair extensions. I flew up from Arizona to Seattle and drove to Moses Lake to have an amazing experience getting hair extensions.
Thanks to Joanne at St. Onge Hair Studio and the extensions she used, I am very happy with my progress. Seeing this beautiful, long (28 inches), thick hair reminds me of my recovery journey! For those with trichotillomania, this may be a great alternative in helping on your journey to recovery.
