This shop has a good section of fishing gear, but our family has never had such a bad customer service experience. I am not sure why, but the rudeness of the older male clerk was completely uncalled for. Perhaps he is a mad, unhappy person, but we will skip coming here in the future and spend our money elsewhere.

After spending 40 years in retail, I think I know the difference between someone who is having a bad day and someone who just really should find another line of work. I'm sure it is frustrating with people wandering through the store never buying anything, god forbid any of them have children, but you run a store in a tourist town (I have) and that's what you get. Deal with it or get out! Been in three times and every time the owner was either indifferent or blatantly rude. I made the mistake of touching a fly and like many reviewers here, got scolded. Use tweezers? How the hell does he tie his flies on? Been in dozens of fly shops and never had an issue touching flies. No flies for you!

Moved to the area a few months ago, but have been coming over to Winthrop for the past 20 years. Spent $70.00 here last week when a very nice and helpful lady was working. I was out on the river putting one of the new flies I'd just purchased on my leader when the new fly came unraveled. Today I went in to purchase a number of items that would have easily come out to a couple hundred dollars, likely more, and I thought I would bring the faulty fly in with the hope of exchanging it for another. To begin with, the guy working there didn't say a word to us when we walked in. When I asked if I could exchange the fly due to the issue, he snapped, "We don't do that here. Flies don't come with a lifetime guarantee." Okay, I didn't expect a lifetime guarantee, but perhaps a "day without even using the fly guarantee?" I determined I would not give this person my business today or any other day given his abrasive attitude. I'd even considered purchasing another rod at this place next week. With fishing friends coming to town this week, we will certainly stay clear of this shop for any of our purchases. I even made a call to them to tell them to make any fishing purchases that I had recommended that they make here, to do it before coming here as I refuse to enter this shop again. I should have paid attention to the previous reviews which mentioned his poor social skills and lack of customer service. But, I figured since I live here, I'd bring my business to a local shop. Not happening going forward at the Outdoorsmen.
