In our experience, the Pipe Guys were unprofessional and did not communicate well, and it ultimately cost us more money on our project. The PipeGuys started work on the agreed-upon date in our contract, but before a permit to do the work was on file, so the City charged an early start fee. It was the responsibility of The Pipe Guys to make sure there is a permit on file before they started work. However, the Pipe Guys refused to take responsibility for starting work without a permit. We tried to solve the issue internally but got some pretty rude feedback from the owner, which included bringing up non-issues and deliberate mischaracterizations of the matter to distract from the fact that they started work without a permit.
On the Pipe Guys actual work, they did an adequate job. BUT, if you expect to hire a company that both does quality work and is competent, ThePipe Guys may not be for you. If you do hire them, be prepared to have unclear (and even rude) communication and double (triple!) check anything they tell you with the City since they either do not know the regulations or don't consistently care to follow them and then put the onus on the homeowner.
A friend referred me to The Pipe Guys, I am glad she did. Those guys were responsive and quick, they were willing to look at the side sewer inspection documentation from another source and provide a rough estimate at no charge. They provided a tough but honest assessment of how soon the sewer should be replaced which is basically what I needed to hear. Not only that he educated me on various possibilities from the best to worst case scenario and the type of pipe I am dealing with. Dan will be getting my business in the near future.
Follow up:
They came out to replace the sewer, Dan and Kathy had been very supportive and straightforward throughout the whole process. Their employees (Aaron and Justice) were courteous and did hard work. I will definitely recommend their business to others.
