I survived Dr. Oman. Dr. Kurachi was my OBGYN throughout my pregnancy. I received what Id term the epitome of “care” . I would recommend Dr. Kurachi to any mother in the city of Seattle and would be confident that they would receive the highest caliber of care, encounter kindness and be assured of a compassionate doctor that is in love with her job, babies and healthy moms. During the birth of my son, Dr. Kurachi was not on call. I will never forget this haunting moment. I was greeted with nothing but rudeness and disdain upon entry. At home, my Doula supported my delivery preparation and we charted off as a team of three (my husband, myself and doula) ready to embark on a beautiful journey. When we arrived Dr. Oman was in her “street clothes” we weren’t sure if she was coming or going. Her nurses inquired if we had applied for WIC, such a peculiar question. I informed them my salary was well over $125K and tried to disregard the ignorance in the assumption. They followed up with “are you sure?”. Dr. Oman informed me i'd need a c-section. It’s worth noting my son was delivered at 4:31am—during the peak hours doctors urge women and especially women of color to have a c-section in order to reduce the wait time for delivery as a result of fatigue and other issues.
I contested the need for a c-section. She said to think about it and she’d return in 30 minutes regarding my answer. She returned in 10 minutes and prepared me for the surgery and did not follow up on the discussion. My doula was stunned and requested the ability to go into the operating room. It’s worth noting doulas are hired by Polyclinic and Swedish and this request is normal. Dr. Oman declined her request. Delivery seemed to go well, my husband and i noticed a slight tug from the doctor at the end when removing our son but no worries so we thought.
I returned home and was devouring my pain medication, constantly in pain and i was unable to hold my first born child. I was hospitalized three times during the course of his recent arrival for weeks at a time. The reason given though there were NO issues throughout the pregnancy "a blood vessel burst" and caused so much internal bleeding it caused my intestines to clog. I had to have surgery to remove the blockage. I delivered my son weighing 181 pounds, less than two months later i was weighing 118. During my hospitalizations Dr. Oman scantly gave me eye contact and during a check up I refused to see her again and unfortunately bumped into her less than 5 feet away and she avoided eye contact and engagement. I greeted her just to assess and she nodded and walked away. During my hospitalizations she even managed to forget to write pain prescriptions and had to return to the hospital to write a prescription before I was discharged in pain.
This woman should not be practicing medicine. She has deplorable bed side manner and lacks the skills necessary to keep patients safe- or SOME patients. I survived Dr. Oman. My spirit was scarred, I missed the first 2 months of my son’s life and I had intended to file a malpractice lawsuit but after relocating to Houston, TX to be near family to mentally and spiritually heal we were swept up in Hurricane Harvey and I missed the window to file. I would not recommend her to anyone. This woman should not be practicing. Black women experience a high rate/disproportionate of maternity mortality because of this type of bed side manner and total disregard for our lives.
