Rented a 5' x 8' trailer from uhaul to move some furniture from Vancouver to Tacoma. After unloading the furniture in Tacoma, we were headed home to Vancouver when the trailer came detached from the SUV. It slammed into the back of our SUV, bounced on the road and then hit the SUV several times damaging the back lift gate. Luckily we were on a neighborhood road only traveling about 15 mph. Called UHaul in Hazel Dell who referred us o UHaul roadside assistance. A representative from UHaul Tocoma arrived and tightened the trailer coupler with a rubber hammer, and said it was safe to transport back to Vancouver. A few minutes later a representative from a local tow company arrived and said the trailer coupler was too tight. He loosened the hitch and said it was safe to transport back to Vancouver. But he said to stop frequently to check to see if it was holding. As it is not uncommon for the screw down trailer coupler mechanism to loosen with vibration. None of the individuals looked under the trailer nor did they remove the hitch from the trailer and examine all of the parts. It took about 3.5 hours to get back to Vancouver, as the trailer vibrated and rattled the whole drive and had to be retightened several times. The next day we noticed our SUV had a vibration/rattle in the rear and the SUV. Since the SUV was damaged from the trailer, we did not want to attach the trailer back to the SUV to transport it back to UHaul. UHaul was very uncooperative and would charge us a tow fee to pick up the trailer if we did not get it back to UHaul as their representative in Tacoma said there was nothing wrong with the trailer. UHaul feels that since their representative checked the trailer coupling (by hitting it with a rubber hammer) then there is nothing wrong with the trailer. Apparently detaching from the vehicle is a frequent occurrence. :-(

I had a long distance truck return at this location. The process was quick and smooth. Both associates were very helpful and friendly. I think one was the manager. I am not near my paperwork to confirm. I was very pleased with the entire interaction.
