Choosing Unfurling Midwifery for our second child's birth ended up being one of the best decisions I've ever made. I had my first baby in a hospital in a very straight-forward "hospitally" way and now a baby at home and it's honestly hard to even compare the experiences - they were that drastically different. If you are reading this and trying to decide if a home birth is the right option for you - I HIGHLY recommend setting up an interview with Carter, Catherine, and Sarah - there is nothing to lose from meeting with them and I promise you will leave not just ready, but excited, to birth your baby at home. From our very first meeting I felt such a massive sense of peace and calm. They treated us like equals in the process...never pushing anything, always approaching every conversation and question with genuine curiosity and empathy, and listening deeply to our questions, concerns, excitements, and hopes around the birth. They devote so much time to your prenatal and emotional care leading up to the birth (one full hour appointments) that by the time my daughter was born I felt totally at ease and comfortable with their presence. The way they approach care is a paradigm shift from anything I have experienced in a health-care setting. I truly believe they are engaged in radical healing - for me this was most salient in the minutes, days, and weeks following the birth. I felt so unbelievably cared for. They provided a loving and safe place for my daughter to transition into the world. They were rockstars with my oldest child by including him in conversations about the baby and birth process. They cleaned our house following the birth so I didn't have to worry about anything and could focus completely on my tiny human. They supported breastfeeding, gave herbal recommendations to help with sleep and anxiety, and provided so much love and care when things were hard and I needed to cry. They provided all of this in my home so I could just focus completely on my family -- it was a priceless gift and one that I had no idea how impactful it would be. Truly, I would choose a home birth with Unfurling Midwifery again without hesitation based on the postpartum care alone.
We interviewed a few midwifery teams in Portland and while everyone was lovely, there was something unique about Unfurling Midwifery. They are true champions of birthing people, babies, and building resilient family systems through compassionate and informed care. My wish is that anyone experiencing pregnancy, childbirth, and infant care can get this level of beautiful support - it is life changing. Plus they are fun and cool to be around. I would recommend them a million times over and wish I could give more than five stars.
We are so happy we found the wonderful team at Unfurling Birth. I was on the hunt for birth support that rode the line of allopathic informed care and traditional practices, the lovely humans at Unfurling Birth did so with grace and confidence. Both myself and my partner felt held and supported by the whole team through out my pregnancy and labor experience, We both felt genuinely informed and wholeheartedly involved with my pregnancy and labor.
I cannot recommend them enough, even as we left the office for the last time, I said see you at our next pregnancy!
