I know that university counseling centers get bad reps and that a lot of times they are because of people’s very valid bad experiences. AND, I think that can be the case with finding the right fit for a therapist and medical services in general. I just want to say that as a UW grad student, from scheduling my appointment, to having two sessions with a counselor here, to the resources they were able to provide me with for finding longer-term care, I had an incredibly lovely experience with UWCC.

My experience there was a long time ago, but I'm posting a review to provide guidance for others. I was referred to the Counseling Ctr by the health center, whose psych staff told me it was for people needing longer-term counseling, like for deep issues, family history issues. But the counselors I was assigned to weren't trained in that type of work. These were grad students, one getting her MSW degree, the other--a degree in Ed Psych, who were there to do their required clinic hours for their degree. They weren't experienced counselors except on a superficial level, and their focus was not what I needed. The counseling ctr. does have psychotherapists on staff, but if that's what you're looking for, you need to request that. Just giving y'all a heads-up. I did have a friend who graduated from UW before I entered, who had found the center very helpful, because she got the right type of counselor from the start.
