The funny thing about being Japanese is how much people love the culture and how easily they can separate it from the people. I have been in this store a couple times, the merchandising is beautiful, the products promise a life fulfilled, but the employees have left much to be desired. The first time I went in I made a purchase and was mostly brushed off by the person who rung up my items. She was quick to make pleasant small talk with the next customer after being frigid in her rushed and brief interaction with me. Today I wandered in with my mom and almost made eye contact with an employee. She saw me looking her was and immediately turned away, maybe she was busy, maybe she just hates customer service, if that’s the case then surely she should find a new job.
I think this store is beautiful. I think that Scandinavian and Japanese design have a symmetry that feels poignant. As a Japanese American I was even excited to find a store filled with beautiful things that remind me of myself. But it is rudely juxtaposed by the way the employees have made me feel. I may return, but only to take pictures of the products I love or to find them else where on the internet or otherwise.
