This review is 4 years overdue because I had to wait until I was safely in a new apartment because god forbid I get a bad recommendation.
We moved in December 2018. When we moved in we asked about our ESA and got a verbal and texted okay from Wendy, the front desk lady. So what a shocker it was to us a month into our stay when Dean called us screaming that he had "discovered" we had a pet and we would need to give him $300 for a pet deposit within 3 days or be evicted (in case anyone needs to know this, you cannot evict someone verbally. It needs to be in writing). He claimed he had never heard of emotional support animals, he had never heard of the Fair Housing Act (what). Our roommate was scared by this and gave him the money. When they dropped the money at the office, Wendy refused to even give them a receipt to prove they had paid the deposit. I took it to HUD and they filed a complaint for us. After several months, we were able to get our money back and told that Dean was made to attend fair housing classes.
Shortly after this, a possum (or some other rodent) took up residence in our attic. We could hear it and sent video to them, but they told us it was "probably just the cat". We started getting mites from the possum coming through the walls. It took several months before they dealt with this. I wound up spending over $50 on pesticides and eventually got them out of the house. I asked if this could be deducted from our rent and received no reply.
Not long after, we went through a rainy season. Since it is an older house, the humidity caused our front door to fully jam to the point where it was inoperable. We requested maintenance for a few months but it was not dealt with until we contacted the fire department, at which point it was completed the next day.
We had a bed bug issue during the height of the pandemic. Once again, no concrete action was taken until we contacted the city at which point an inspection was scheduled within 24 hours. In the end, we got heat treated by them once and I wound up spending over $500 on Hot Shot, Crossfire, and Cinemex, and Dean had the gall to complain to me about "I had no idea how much money I was costing him". They tried to make it our fault despite the inspector saying that we most likely got them from the laundry room.
At this same time, we applied for and were approved for our city's rental assistance program. It would have supplied us with $4000 to assist in paying our rent. During this time we had been laid off and were on unemployment as well as it was when the supplemental assistance had stopped, so it would have been EXTREMELY helpful to have had that money. It required signing an agreement with our landlord. KRPM refused to sign the agreement due to a clause in the paperwork that basically said the landlord had to uphold the VAWA act even if it wasn't stated in the lease because it "made them uncomfortable that anything could supersede the lease" (even the law? Give me a break). So they shorted all of us $4000 because they were "uncomfortable".
Then we all started moving out. My roommate sent their notice and I sent mine. Dean would later tell the current tenant that he never received them and he didn't know we had left, despite them calling me immediately after receiving it so I know that's not true. My roommate was also listed on the eviction notice sent to the current tenants by "mistake".
I'll put it this way: I miss that little apartment so much but I advise you do not rent from these people. They are shady as hell, slow to take care of anything even the most reasonable stuff. They want to do everything over the phone so nothing is in writing, don't let them, keep a paper trail of everything. Dean does not have a firm grasp of landlord tenant law, the entire office doesn't lol. Also if you search "KRPM complaints” you can find their other Yelp pages and even lawsuits. I wish them only the same care and quality of life they bestow upon their tenants.
