We completed this trail on March 2, 2024. We reached the trailhead around 9:30 AM and started the hike around 10 AM. The parking lot was ¾ full when we started the hike. The bathroom at the trailhead was well-maintained. The trail was completely snowy from the beginning though it was easy to navigate. There is some trail damage and washout early on but is not too bad. Halfway up the trail, the snowpack was getting worse but there were people who made it all the way up without microspikes. There are a few spots with slush on the trail as well. We decided to wear microspikes as we encountered more people and the snow started to harden. The trail began to narrow as the snow was piling up on both sides of the trail making it difficult to pass other people. It was still snowing when we made it to the top of the trail. The lake was completely snowed on and the boardwalk around the lake had a few feet of snow piled on. It was difficult to walk on the boardwalk and we turned around part way there. We did see a cute snowshoe bunny on the lake. Overall it took us over 5 hours to do the entire trail including breaks and time spent at the lake.
Honestly, I absolutely enjoyed the trail up to the lake and the entire area up top at the lake itself. I highly recommend planning some extra time to simply enjoy a picnic lunch, maybe find a spot to set up a hammock.
Just being up in the mountains, surrounded by such natural beauty is enough for me to want to soak in as much of it as I can. Sure, it’s a popular spot, you will likely run into plenty of people along your way. But every person I ran into was pleasant, and contributed to the overall positive experience!
